FAQ

Cleaning your fly line is very important especially when fishing saltwater. Simply pull line off your reel into a clean bucket or tub of freshwater. Put roughly 1oz or more of Cortland’s Line Cleaner solution onto a clean rag or towel. Firmly squeeze the towel with Pro Line Cleaner around the line and slowly pull line through the towel. You should be able to see dirt or discolored streaks on the towel when finished.

The streamer floater!

Excellent quality line that performs above expectations. Launches larger dry flies and heavy streamers. In summer creeks, I can use this with a longer leader and drift streamers with no need for sinking line!

Built for Anglers Who Cast Big and Bold

When you’re targeting trophy-sized species in demanding conditions, you need a line that loads fast, punches hard, and delivers big flies with authority. Cortland’s Big Shot Fly Line was engineered specifically for anglers who want maximum power without sacrificing presentation control. Whether you're casting bulky streamers, oversized poppers, or air-resistant flies, this line’s aggressive taper and compact head are designed to load quickly and shoot effortlessly through tight windows.

Unlike traditional weight-forward lines that often struggle with heavier fly patterns, the Big Shot was purpose-built for the job. Its short, powerful head excels at delivering flies quickly with minimal false casting—an asset when targeting fast-moving fish or casting from tight banks. With its high-visibility coating and low-memory construction, this line stands up to hot days on the water without coiling or tangling.

From tidal creeks and bass ponds to backcountry lakes, the Big Shot handles wind, vegetation, and variable casting angles with ease. It’s a reliable option for anglers who fish aggressively, adapt quickly, and need gear that performs under pressure. Whether you're chasing bass, pike, redfish, or any species that demands a bold presentation, this line gives you the firepower to meet the challenge.

Optimized Taper for Maximum Energy Transfer

At the heart of the Big Shot Fly Line is a specially designed compact head that transitions smoothly into a thinner running line. This taper is fine-tuned to deliver the perfect balance of power and control, which allows you to launch large patterns while maintaining the accuracy needed to hit your target on the first shot. Whether you're stripping baitfish patterns through a saltwater flat or pounding structure for largemouth bass, this line keeps you in command of your cast.

The front-loaded design enhances loop formation, while the high-grain weight within the head ensures efficient rod loading across a wide range of rod actions. From 8-weight to 12-weight setups, the Big Shot line complements fast-action rods perfectly and makes long days of casting heavy flies feel less taxing. Backed by Cortland’s durable coatings and slick-shooting finish, this line maintains high performance even after repeated abuse in the field.

Versatile for Freshwater and Saltwater Conditions

Whether you’re fishing the Gulf Coast for redfish or probing deep pockets in Midwestern rivers for smallmouth, the Big Shot Fly Line offers the versatility needed for crossover environments. Its rugged construction resists saltwater wear, while the powerful taper gives anglers the ability to cast through wind, reach distant pockets, and turn over dense fly profiles with confidence.

The high-floating core keeps your line on the surface when fishing topwater patterns or suspended streamers, while the line’s vibrant color makes tracking your cast easier under variable light conditions. For anglers in regions like Florida, Texas, or California, where both salt and freshwater predator species coexist, the Big Shot provides one solution across multiple fisheries.

For serious anglers who demand power, precision, and reliability from their gear, the Cortland Big Shot Fly Line delivers at every level. Whether you’re fishing from a skiff, wading a rocky shoreline, or casting from a float tube, this line ensures you stay in control—even when the fish of a lifetime is on the other end. Upgrade your gear with the Big Shot and bring more confidence to every cast.
